- estou muite  bam pago 800$00 per meis cama e comoda roupa lavada e gomado e pontiada …

a misterious letter

Life is also made up of unexpected and special moments … the story of today began with a family walk at Praia Formosa. Vitor Bettencourt found an old and yellowish piece of paper flying in the Atlantic breeze…

He picked it up and gave it a glance. It was a letter dated from March 11th (presumably from the year 1944) and decided to keep it in a drawer at this home office. It has passed almost ten years, and some days ago, the letter gained life (yes, words do have a life of their own!) and demanded Vitor Bettencourt to examine it more carefully:

The first step was to transcribe the letter. Then, and in order to facilitate reading, Vitor Bettencourt re-wrote it, getting rid of the mistakes and trying to complete the sense, that is, reading between the lines – a demanding but rewarding task, indeed. Later, and still not pleased with the results, he spent some days at Funchal Archive looking for Sofia … the person to whom the letter had been sent … the wife whose husband had written telling that :

-         I am very well paid 800$00 per month for a bed and cleaned laundry…

The letter is incomplete. We think that a page might be missing. We don’t know who Sofia is. We don’t know who her husband is, either. However, we do know that Sofia and her husband lived apart from each other and that he wrote to her telling about his life in Lourenço Marques and how he missed her so much…

Sofia’ s letter is a perfect example of the ways of life … fragmented, twisted … winding, but made up of people just like you and I.
